Pros and Cons

Why Study at Lumbini Medical College Nepal?

Is Tansen the right place for you? That depends on what you want from five years. Here is what is particular to Lumbini.

Close to the UP border

Sonauli is a few hours away by road, and no visa is needed. Most students take a train to Gorakhpur, cross over and carry on through Butwal.

Hospital on campus

The teaching hospital belongs to the college, so you are not spending an hour on a bus to reach patients. Cases are the kind you will meet back home: typhoid, TB, fractures, snakebite in the monsoon.

Kathmandu University degree

The course is 54 months of study plus a 12-month internship, the pattern India’s NMC expects from foreign graduates.

Calm, cool hill town

At about 1,350 metres the weather stays cool for most of the year, traffic is light and rent and food cost less than in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

On money, Lumbini generally sits in the middle of Nepal’s private colleges for Indian students: not the cheapest, not the dearest. Confirm this against the 2027 fee letter, because numbers change from year to year.

Think twice if:

  • your NEET rank can get you a government seat in India (take that, no argument)
  • you want malls and cafes. Tansen is small and some students get bored by month three
  • long hill roads worry you. The road up from Butwal has many bends, and in heavy rain a landslide can add hours to a trip
Ranking

Lumbini Medical College Ranking: What You Can Trust

You will not find Lumbini Medical College in QS, Times Higher Education or NIRF. Most private medical colleges in Nepal are not there either, so do not read much into it. Some agent websites call it a top-15 private college in Nepal. Take those lists lightly, because many are written by the people selling the seats.

Check these instead: Kathmandu University gives the degree, the Nepal Medical Council recognises the college, the course follows the 54 months plus 12 months internship pattern, and there is a working hospital on campus. Then find a current third-year student and ask what an ordinary week looks like. Ten minutes on a call tells you more than any ranking table.

Eligibility

Lumbini Medical College Eligibility Criteria 2027

MBBS eligibility for Indian students

Age17 or older by 31 December 2027
Class 12 subjectsPhysics, Chemistry, Biology and English from a recognised board
Marks50% in PCB for General, 40% for SC/ST/OBC
NEETQualified in NEET-UG

People get one thing wrong all the time: it is your PCB average that counts, not the overall Class 12 percentage.

Is NEET compulsory for Lumbini Medical College Nepal MBBS admission?

Yes. Join without a qualifying score and you will not be allowed to sit the licensing exam in India later, which leaves your degree stuck in Nepal. Qualifying means the 50th percentile for General and the 40th for reserved categories, and the score is usually accepted for three years. Check the latest NMC notice for current rules.

Is there a Lumbini Medical College NEET cut-off?

The college does not publish a fixed NEET cut-off for foreign seats. Offers mostly go to eligible students in the order they apply, so being early helps.

NMC rules for the degree to count in India

NMC’s foreign graduate rules ask for 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same college, and English as the teaching language. Lumbini’s course fits that. Still, get a line in writing saying your internship will be done at the college hospital, and keep it safe. Also check mec.gov.np for Nepal’s Medical Education Commission rules on foreign candidates.

How to reach Lumbini Medical College from India

Many students take a train to Gorakhpur, go on to Sonauli, cross over and carry on by road through Butwal. Others fly into Bhairahawa (Gautam Buddha Airport) and drive up to Tansen. Indian citizens do not need a visa for Nepal, but carry your passport for a long stay. It makes the border and the SIM card easier.

A warning worth reading twice: never pay a “seat blocking” amount in cash or into a person’s personal bank or UPI account. Ask for an official receipt in the college’s name.
Required Documents

Documents Required for Lumbini Medical College MBBS Admission

  • NEET-UG scorecard
  • Valid passport (apply early if you do not have one)
  • Birth certificate
  • Passport-size photographs

Courses

Lumbini Medical College Courses and Syllabus

MBBS is what most Indian students come for, but the college and hospital run other programmes too. Different sources list these (confirm the current list on lmc.edu.np):

  • MBBS
  • BDS (confirm)
  • BSc Nursing
  • BSc MLT (confirm)
  • MD and MS in some clinical subjects (confirm)

The MBBS runs 66 months. Fifty-four of them are classes and clinical postings. The last twelve are your internship in the college hospital, where you rotate through departments and take your share of night duty. Ask any intern and they will tell you that is the year it finally starts to feel like medicine.

Lumbini Medical College MBBS syllabus

The syllabus comes from Kathmandu University. Years one and two are basic sciences: anatomy, physiology and biochemistry first, then pathology, microbiology and pharmacology. Forensic medicine, community medicine, ENT and eye come after that. From there it is mostly wards: medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, psychiatry and skin. Confirm the year-wise split with the current KU curriculum.

It lines up reasonably well with FMGE, and with NExT once that arrives. Do not leave FMGE prep until after the internship. Students who start question banks in third year have a much easier time of it.

Lumbini Medical College departments

The college teaches through the usual departments of a KU medical college. Check the official list on lmc.edu.np.

  • Basic sciences: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry
  • Para-clinical: Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine
  • Clinical: Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Radiology
Fees

Lumbini Medical College MBBS Fee Structure 2027 for Indian Students

Everyone scrolls straight to this part, so we will be careful with it. Indian students are admitted on the foreign quota, and the fee for that quota is not the capped fee Nepali students pay. The college sets it. Go looking online and you will find totals for the full MBBS course anywhere from about ₹45 lakh to ₹57 lakh, depending on the site. That gap should make you cautious. Do not trust any single number you read, this page included. Ask the college for its official fee letter for 2027.

Questions to ask before paying Lumbini Medical College fees

  • Does the quoted fee cover 4.5 years or the full 5.5?
  • Is the internship billed separately?
  • What is every extra charge besides tuition, including service fees? Ask for an itemised list.
  • How much comes back if you withdraw in the first month?
  • Is the fee fixed for all years?

Many Nepali colleges collect a big chunk in year one, so plan your education loan around that first payment. Get all answers in writing.

Living Cost

Lumbini Medical College Living Cost for Indian Students

Tansen is cheap. Outside tuition and hostel, most students get by on about NPR 18,000 to 30,000 a month, roughly ₹11,000 to ₹19,000. Ask current students for the latest figure before you budget. Food is the biggest bite, then local travel, then phone and laundry. Renting a flat instead of taking the hostel will add to that.

Small Indian notes are taken in most shops, but keep some Nepali rupees on you. Get a local SIM with your passport too, since roaming bills add up quickly.

Student Life and Hostel

Lumbini Medical College Student Life and Hostel Facilities

Student life in Tansen

Be honest with yourself about this one: student life here is mostly studying. Lectures in the morning, practicals after lunch, books at night. By third year the wards and OPD eat most of your day. The campus has lecture halls, a dissection hall, labs, a library, a canteen and Wi-Fi (confirm the skills lab, sports ground and gym). Your batch will be a mix of Indian students from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Bengal, plus Nepali classmates. Diwali, Holi and Chhath get celebrated, so you will not feel too far from home.

On weekends, people wander through Tansen bazaar, known for its Dhaka cloth and metalwork, or walk up to the Srinagar Hill viewpoint. Bigger shopping means a bus down to Butwal. It is a slow life, and plenty of students end up liking that.

Lumbini Medical College hostel and accommodation

Most Indian students stay in the college hostel, at least for the first couple of years. Boys and girls are in separate blocks with their own wardens, and rooms are usually shared by two or three people. The mess serves North Indian and Nepali food, so ask for a sample weekly menu before you join. Sources mention Wi-Fi, filtered water, security staff and CCTV (confirm with the college). If you fall ill at midnight, the hospital is a short walk away.

The 2027 hostel fee is not confirmed. Check whether it covers food, laundry and electricity. Book your bed the day your seat is confirmed, and pack an extension board, a padlock and proper winter clothes, because Tansen nights get cold.

Foreign seats are limited. Apply early.

Scholarship, Loans and Career

Lumbini Medical College Scholarship, Education Loan and Placement

Scholarship seats at Nepali medical colleges mostly go to Nepali citizens and are handed out through the Medical Education Commission. For foreign students, Lumbini has not announced a regular scholarship. If an agent promises a big discount, ask to see it in the offer letter. If it is not written there, it does not exist.

Most Indian families take an education loan. SBI, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank and a few other lenders finance MBBS abroad, and Nepal is included. Start the paperwork the day your offer letter lands, because banks are slow. Also check your state’s scholarship portal, particularly if you are in a reserved category.

Placement and career after MBBS at Lumbini Medical College

There are no placement drives at Lumbini Medical College. There are none at any medical college. After the internship, the usual road back to India goes like this: clear FMGE (or NExT, once it replaces it), do a supervised internship in India, then register with your state medical council. After that you can work as a medical officer or prepare for NEET PG. Some students stay in Nepal instead, pass the Nepal Medical Council exam and apply for MD or MS seats through the Medical Education Commission.

The ones who clear FMGE on the first attempt nearly always started early. Do not trust a “high pass rate” claim from a consultancy site unless it names a source.
