Birat Medical College Overview
Birat Medical College is a private medical college in Tankisinuwari, just outside Biratnagar in eastern Nepal. It opened in 2014 and is affiliated with Kathmandu University (KU), which sets the syllabus, runs the exams and awards the degree. For Indian students, the location is a big part of the appeal. The Jogbani border in Bihar is close, there is no visa to arrange, and the food and daily life will not feel very different from home.
The college has its own teaching hospital on campus, so students can walk from the lecture hall to the wards and start learning with real patients early on. Along with MBBS, it runs BSc Nursing, Bachelor of Physiotherapy and several MD and MS programmes, which keeps senior doctors and residents in most departments.
The college is recognised by the Nepal Medical Council. The MBBS course takes 5.5 years, including a one-year internship at the college hospital, which matches the duration rules of India’s National Medical Commission (NMC) for Indian students who plan to practise in India later.

Seat numbers matter. The number open to Indian students is the one that counts, so ask the college in writing how many seats are open this year and how many were filled last year.
Why Study at Birat Medical College?
Birat Medical College shares the advantages of the rest of Nepal: no visa for Indians, familiar food and patients who look a lot like the ones you would treat back home (TB, typhoid, dengue, snakebite). Three things set this college apart.
The hospital is on campus
Some colleges bus students to a hospital far away, and a lot of clinical time goes on the road. Here you walk over from the lecture hall. Ask the college for its current bed count and department list during a visit or video tour.
A strong PG side
The college runs MD and MS courses in around fifteen subjects, so most departments have senior doctors and most wards have residents. Residents are often the ones who show you how to put in a cannula at 2 am.
A stable cost base
The Nepali rupee is pegged to the Indian rupee at 1.6 to 1, so the local part of your costs will not jump because of a currency swing in third year.
Close to home
Jogbani is a short trip away, so a parent from Bihar or eastern UP can reach the campus quickly. That counts for more than brochures admit, especially in the first semester.
Think twice if:
- your NEET rank can get you a government seat in India (take that first)
- you want a big-city campus. Biratnagar is not Kathmandu, so do not expect a cafe on every corner
- you expect the college name alone to clear India’s licensing exam for you (see recognition checks)
Birat Medical College Ranking
Birat Medical College does not appear in QS, Times Higher Education or NIRF. Most private medical colleges in Nepal do not, so this is not a red flag by itself. A couple of web ranking sites put it at about 15th in Nepal and about 5,960th in the world. Those lists mostly count web pages and citations. They cannot tell you whether a professor shows up for your 8 am class.
A better check is whether these four things hold: Kathmandu University gives the degree, the Nepal Medical Council recognises the college, the course meets India’s NMC rule of 54 months of study plus a 12-month internship, and a working hospital sits on campus. After that, speak to a third-year student. Ten minutes on the phone beats any ranking.
Birat Medical College Eligibility Criteria 2027
| Requirement | What you need |
|---|---|
| Age | 17 or older by 31 December 2027 |
| Class 12 | Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, from a recognised board |
| Marks | 50% in PCB (general), 40% (SC/ST/OBC) |
| NEET | Qualified in NEET-UG |
People mix this up often: it is your PCB percentage that counts, not your overall percentage.
Is NEET mandatory for Birat Medical College?
Yes, you cannot skip it. If you join without a qualifying score, the National Medical Commission will not let you sit the licensing exam in India later, and your degree is stuck in Nepal. Qualifying means the 50th percentile for the general category and the 40th for reserved categories. Check the latest NMC and NTA notices for validity rules.
Is there a Birat Medical College NEET cutoff?
No official cutoff is published. You must clear the qualifying percentile, and admission then depends on seats open to Indian students and the number of applicants, which is why applying early helps. Ask the college: “What was the lowest NEET score admitted last year?” and note the answer and the date.
NMC rules for foreign graduates
India’s National Medical Commission wants 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same college, and English as the medium of teaching. Birat’s course fits, but get it in writing that your internship will happen there, and keep that paper safe.

Birat Medical College Admission Process 2027
The process is simple. Here is the path from NEET result to first day of class:
- Get your NEET-UG scorecardNEET is usually held in May with results in June. NTA announces the 2027 dates.
- Request a written fee sheetAsk the college for the fee schedule and the seat position for Indian students, in writing.
- Fill the application formSend scans of your marksheets, NEET result and passport or ID, directly or through an authorised representative.
- Document checkThe college verifies your documents. Nepal’s Medical Education Commission (MEC) regulates admissions, and notices appear on mec.gov.np.
- Offer letterIf you are selected, an offer letter arrives with the fee schedule.
- Pay only to the collegePay the first instalment straight into the college’s own bank account, as printed in the letter. Keep the receipt.
- Travel and joinMost students take a train to Jogbani and cross by road. Others fly to Kathmandu and take a short flight to Biratnagar. At the college you hand over your originals, register with Kathmandu University and get your hostel room.
Batch start dates for 2027 are not announced, so check the offer letter. Do not sit on your offer letter, because foreign seats are limited and they fill.
Documents Required for Birat Medical College Admission 2027
Keep both originals and scanned copies of:
- NEET-UG 2027 scorecard and admit card
- Class 10 marksheet and certificate (proof of date of birth)
- Class 12 marksheet and transcript
- Transfer certificate or college leaving certificate
- Passport (or valid ID such as Aadhaar or voter ID)
- Proof of nationality and birth certificate
- Passport-size colour photographs (about 4 copies)
- Admission letter from the college, once issued
Indian citizens do not need a visa for Nepal. Ask the college whether any of your documents need attestation, and start early so that it does not delay your joining date.
Birat Medical College Courses and Syllabus
The college offers MBBS, BSc Nursing, Bachelor of Physiotherapy and several MD and MS programmes. MBBS is the course most Indian students apply for.
The MBBS course lasts 66 months. Fifty-four of those are classes and clinical postings. The last twelve are your internship in the college hospital, moving from department to department and pulling your share of night shifts. Ask any intern and they will say that is the year it finally feels real.
Syllabus
Birat follows the syllabus written by Kathmandu University. The first two years cover the basic sciences: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology and pharmacology, taught by body system so that you study the heart across subjects together. Third year adds forensic medicine, community medicine, ENT and eye. After that it is mostly wards: medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics, orthopaedics, psychiatry and skin. Ask the college for the current year-wise split.
The syllabus lines up well with India’s FMGE. Do not leave FMGE preparation for after the internship, because students who start question banks in third year have a much easier time.
Birat Medical College Fee Structure 2027
Fee numbers on the internet differ because they measure different things: Nepali quota versus foreign quota, tuition versus the full package, and dollars versus rupees. Birat’s fees are capped by Nepal’s Medical Education Commission, like every private medical college in the country.
| Item | Figure | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| Nepali student, paying seat, full MBBS | NPR 45,95,720 (about ₹28.7 lakh) | Nepal-side listing |
| Tuition for foreign students | USD 58,494 to USD 59,000 | College-side listings |
| Total for Indian students, 2026–27 | ₹65 lakh | Consultant portal |
| Total for Indian students, 2026–27 | ₹52.8 lakh | Consultant portal |
| Hostel + mess | ₹1.92 lakh per year | Consultant portal |
Indian students sit on the foreign quota, which has its own fee. You will not pay the Nepali-quota rate. Get the exact breakup from the college on paper before you pay anything.
One-time charges listed by one portal
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Application form | ₹5,000 |
| One-time admission fee | ₹3,50,000 |
| KU registration | ₹25,000 |
| KU affiliation | ₹65,000 |
| Nepal Medical Council registration | ₹5,000 |
| Bed and bedding | ₹30,000 |
Questions to ask before paying
- Does the fee cover 4.5 years or the full 5.5 years?
- Is the internship charged separately?
- Is the fee fixed for all years, or can it rise?
- What is the refund policy if you drop out in the first month, or if your admission falls through?
Nepali private colleges tend to take a larger share in year one and less later, so plan your loan around that first payment.

Birat Medical College Living Cost
Biratnagar is a cheap city to live in, much cheaper than Kathmandu. Outside tuition and hostel, most students manage on NPR 19,000 to 32,500 a month, which is about ₹12,000 to ₹20,000. Food takes the biggest share, then travel around town, then phone and internet. If you rent a room instead of staying in the hostel, add another NPR 8,000 to 12,000.
Shops in town take Indian ₹100 notes almost everywhere. Get a local SIM with your passport, because roaming bills get expensive fast. Add yearly costs for return trips home and winter clothing.
Birat Medical College Hostel and Student Life
Hostel and accommodation
Most Indian students live in the hostel, at least for the first couple of years. Boys and girls have separate blocks with their own wardens. Rooms are usually shared by two or three students, and the mess cooks North Indian and Nepali food. Listings mention filtered water, Wi-Fi, CCTV and guards at the gate, and the hospital is next door if you fall sick at midnight. One portal lists hostel plus mess at ₹1.92 lakh per year. Confirm what it includes.
Book your room the moment your seat is confirmed, and pack an extension board, a bucket and a padlock.
Student life
Student life is mostly study. Lectures in the morning, practicals after lunch and books at night, and by third year the wards and OPD take most of your day. The campus has lecture halls, a dissection hall, labs, a library, a canteen and Wi-Fi, shared with the hospital. Ask about the skills lab and sports facilities when you visit.
Your batch will be a mix of Indian students from Bihar, UP, Delhi and Bengal, plus Nepali classmates. Chhath here feels just like Patna, and you will eat more momos than you will admit to your mother.
Foreign seats are limited. Apply early.

Birat Medical College Scholarship and Education Loan
A share of MBBS seats (about 10%) is kept as scholarship seats for Nepali citizens, allocated by the MEC. For foreign students, the college has not announced any scholarship. If someone promises you a big discount, ask them to show it in the offer letter. If it is not written there, it does not exist.
Most Indian families take an education loan. SBI, Bank of Baroda and Canara Bank all lend for MBBS abroad, including Nepal. Start the paperwork the day your offer letter arrives, because banks move slowly. It is also worth checking your state’s scholarship portal.
Birat Medical College Placement and Career After MBBS
Birat Medical College does not run placement drives, and no medical college really does. No company turns up on campus with offers for doctors.
Once you finish the internship, the usual way back to India is to clear FMGE (or NExT, once it replaces FMGE), complete a year of supervised internship in India, and register with your state medical council. From there you can join as a medical officer or sit NEET PG. You can also stay in Nepal, pass the Nepal Medical Council exam, and try for an MD or MS seat through MEC, including at Birat itself.
Students who clear FMGE on the first attempt almost always start preparing early.
Is Birat Medical College Recognised? Checks to Do Before Paying
Do not rely on a brochure or a counsellor’s word alone. Studying at a Kathmandu University-affiliated college does not mean the college name will pass India’s licensing exam for you. Before paying, verify these yourself:
- Ask the college for its current recognition documents and check them against Nepal Medical Council and Kathmandu University records.
- Check whether the college appears in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools.
- Read the National Medical Commission’s latest rules for Indian students who study MBBS abroad, including NEET-UG, course duration and internship.
- Remember that you will need to clear India’s licensing screening exam (FMGE or NExT) to practise in India, as with any foreign medical degree.
- Keep every reply from the college in writing, with its date.
Popular Nepal Colleges to Compare for MBBS
Birat Medical College is one of several good options, so look at a few before you decide. Nobel Medical College is in the same city and also under KU, so put the two side by side on fees, hospital and hostel. BPKIHS in Dharan is about an hour away and has a strong name, but getting in is much harder. Kathmandu Medical College and Nepal Medical College put you in the capital, where rent and food cost more. Manipal College of Medical Sciences in Pokhara is another option many Indian families already know.
There is no single best college. Pick the one that suits your NEET score, your budget and how far from home you are comfortable living. Browse more options in our MBBS in Nepal guide.
