Pros and Cons

Why Study at College of Medical Sciences Nepal?

Some reasons apply to every Nepal college: no visa, no IELTS, familiar food and patients with the same illnesses you would see at home, such as dengue, typhoid and TB. These four points are specific to CMS.

The hospital is part of the campus

Some colleges bus students an hour to a partner hospital. At CMS you walk over. The college calls it a tertiary-care centre, and its surgeons did the first kidney transplant outside the Kathmandu valley in April 2015.

Clinical teaching starts in semester one

KU’s curriculum is integrated and problem-based, and clinical orientation begins in the first semester, so you meet patients early.

Postgraduate programmes and links

CMS runs MD, MS and super-specialty programmes, so wards have residents and consultants who teach. It works with BPKIHS in Dharan and has a link with the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.

A fixed exchange rate

The Nepali rupee is pegged to the Indian rupee at 1.6 to 1, so a currency swing will not quietly raise your third-year costs.

Think twice if:

  • your NEET rank can get you a government seat in India (take that first)
  • you want a big-city campus. Bharatpur is a mid-sized city, not Kathmandu
  • you cannot manage a heavy year-one payment (see fee structure)
Ranking

College of Medical Sciences Nepal Ranking

CMS does not appear in QS, Times Higher Education or NIRF. Most private medical colleges in Nepal do not, and the country has no official ranking for them. Nepali education portals such as Edusanjal list CMS Bharatpur, Chitwan Medical College and Manipal in Pokhara among the private colleges students prefer. Web ranking sites show huge global numbers, but those lists count web pages and backlinks, not teaching quality.

Check these instead: Kathmandu University gives the degree, the Nepal Medical Council recognises the college, it is in the WHO directory and the ECFMG list, and the course meets NMC’s 54-month plus 12-month internship rule. Then call a third-year student and ask what it is really like.

Eligibility

College of Medical Sciences Nepal Eligibility Criteria 2027

MBBS eligibility for Indian students
RequirementWhat you need
Age17 or older (confirm the cut-off date with the college)
Class 12Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, from a recognised board
Marks50% in each of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and 50% overall
NEETQualified in NEET-UG

Here is where people slip: the college wants 50% in every PCB subject, plus 50% in aggregate. A 48 in Chemistry can sink you even with a great total. Ask the college whether any relaxation applies to reserved categories.

NEET 2027 and MEC rules

You cannot skip NEET. If you join a Nepali college without a qualifying score, the National Medical Commission will not let you take the licensing exam in India. Qualifying means the 50th percentile for general candidates and the 40th for SC, ST and OBC. Check the latest NMC notice. CMS does not publish a fixed NEET cutoff, so your seat depends on your merit position in the MEC matching round and on how many foreign seats are open.

Foreign candidates apply on the MEC portal, entrance.mec.gov.np, either by sitting MECEE-BL or by using a qualifying NEET score under the foreign sub-category. Dates for the 2027 session are not confirmed, so check mec.gov.np, and keep an eye out for vacant-seat notices if you have missed a window.

NMC’s 2021 regulations for foreign graduates want 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution and English as the teaching language. CMS fits all three, but get a line in writing saying your internship will happen at the college.

Admission Process

College of Medical Sciences Nepal Admission Process 2027

Roughly, the path from NEET result to first day of class looks like this:

  1. Get your NEET-UG scorecardNEET is usually held in May with results in June. Confirm the 2027 dates with NTA.
  2. Register on the MEC portalRegister as a foreign candidate at entrance.mec.gov.np, pay the application fee and upload your Class 12 marksheet, NEET result, passport details and a photo.
  3. Matching roundAfter the entrance result, MEC runs a matching round where you choose colleges in order of merit.
  4. Allotment and fee scheduleIf CMS is your pick and a seat is open, the college confirms your allotment and sends the fee schedule. Confirm this sequence with the CMS admission office.
  5. Pay only to the collegePay the seat fee into the college’s official bank account. Not cash, and never a personal account. Keep every receipt.
  6. Travel and joinMany students take a train to Raxaul or Gorakhpur and finish by road (about 126 km and 240 km). Others fly to Kathmandu and take a short domestic flight to Bharatpur. On arrival you hand over originals, register with KU and collect a hostel room.

Do not sit on your offer letter. Seats are limited and they go quickly.

A warning worth reading twice: never pay a “seat blocking” amount in cash or into a person’s personal bank or UPI account. Ask for an official receipt in the college’s name, and verify anyone who says “pay today or lose your seat.”
Required Documents

College of Medical Sciences Nepal Required Documents

Keep scans ready for the online application and originals ready for the day you arrive:

  • Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets
  • Birth certificate
  • School leaving certificate and conduct certificate
  • Valid Indian passport (no visa needed for Indian citizens)
  • Proof of nationality: Aadhaar, PAN or voter ID
  • NEET-UG scorecard and admit card
  • Passport-size photographs, with a few spares
  • Offer or allotment letter from MEC and the college

The college may ask for more when you reach campus, so check the list with the admission office before you travel.

Courses and Syllabus

College of Medical Sciences Nepal Courses and Syllabus

CMS teaches undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including MBBS, BDS, nursing and paramedical courses, MD, MS and super-specialty programmes, plus bachelor courses in health informatics and in yogic sciences and wellbeing. MBBS is the one most Indian students come for.

The MBBS runs 66 months. The first 54 are classes and clinical postings: two years (four semesters) of pre-clinical teaching, then two and a half years (five semesters) of clinical work. The last twelve months are a rotating internship in the college’s own teaching hospital and community health centres.

Syllabus

CMS follows the syllabus written by Kathmandu University. The first four semesters cover anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology and physiology, tied into community medicine. From the fifth to the ninth semester you are in the clinical phase: medicine, surgery, eye, ENT, obstetrics and gynaecology, forensic medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry, skin, orthopaedics, radiology, anaesthesia and dental.

Three rules catch students out. You must clear every basic science subject before the fifth semester, first-year papers must be passed within three years of joining and second-year papers within four, and you need at least 75% attendance in theory and practicals separately to enter the university exam. Confirm against current KU rules.

The syllabus lines up well with FMGE, but start question banks in third year rather than after the internship.

Departments

  • Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry
  • Microbiology, Pathology and Pharmacology
  • Community Medicine and Forensic Medicine
  • General Medicine and General Surgery
  • Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology and ENT
  • Psychiatry, Dermatology, Radiology and Anaesthesiology
Fee Structure

College of Medical Sciences Nepal Fee Structure 2027

The college’s own website puts the total MBBS package for Indian students at roughly ₹58 to 65 lakh. Treat that as an estimate, not a quote, because the page it sits on is for the 2025–26 batch.

Estimated MBBS fees at College of Medical Sciences Bharatpur (not an official quote)
Fee componentAmount (INR)
First yearAbout ₹30,00,000
Each year from year 2 to year 5About ₹7,00,000
Total tuition, 5.5 yearsAbout ₹58 to 65 lakh
Hostel, per yearAbout ₹95,000
Mess chargesTo be confirmed with the college
KU registration, affiliation and exam feesTo be confirmed with the college

Other Nepali colleges quote the MEC foreign-student figure as about USD 75,000, so ask CMS for its official 2027 figure in INR and USD. Nepali private colleges take a big bite in year one and smaller amounts later, so plan your education loan around that first payment.

Questions to ask before paying

  • Does the quoted fee include the internship year?
  • Which extras (library, student welfare, medical service, university registration and exam fees) come on top?
  • What do you get back if you withdraw in the first month?

Get all three answers on paper. See how another KU-affiliated college prices its seats in our Birat Medical College admission 2027 guide.

Living Cost

College of Medical Sciences Nepal Living Cost

Bharatpur costs far less to live in than Kathmandu. Outside tuition and hostel, most of your money goes on food, then local travel, then phone and internet. Ask current students for a realistic monthly range in INR. If you rent a room off campus instead of using the hostel, you will spend more.

Indian ₹100 notes and below are accepted widely in Nepal, but ₹200 and ₹500 notes are not, so carry small ones. Buy a local SIM with your passport, because roaming bills get expensive fast.

Student Life and Hostel

College of Medical Sciences Nepal Student Life and Hostel

Student life

Student life at CMS is mostly study: lectures in the morning, practicals after lunch and books at night. Once the clinical years start, the wards and OPD take most of your day. The campus has lecture halls with audio-visual equipment and CCTV, labs, an air-conditioned library, a media lab with computer-aided learning, seminar rooms and a canteen. Ask about sports and skills lab facilities when you visit.

Your batch will be a mix of Indian, other foreign and Nepali students. Dashain and Tihar fall around Dussehra and Diwali, and Chitwan National Park is on the doorstep for weekends.

Hostel and accommodation

Most Indian students stay in the college hostel, at least for the first couple of years. The estimate is about ₹95,000 a year. Ask whether that fee covers food, because it often does not, and confirm room sharing, separate blocks for boys and girls, Indian food, Wi-Fi and warden arrangements. Book your room the day your seat is confirmed, and pack an extension board, a bucket and a padlock. The hospital is on the same campus, so a midnight fever is not a drama.

Foreign seats are limited. Apply early.

Book a free counselling call to check your seat position, hostel booking and admission steps for 2027.

Scholarship and Loans

College of Medical Sciences Nepal Scholarship and Education Loan

The Government of Nepal nominates 20% of seats under its education ministry scholarship, but that is for Nepali candidates. Foreign students pay the full foreign-student fee, and CMS has not announced any scholarship for Indian students. If somebody promises you a big discount, ask to see it in the offer letter. If it is not written there, it does not exist.

Most Indian families use an education loan. Banks differ on whether they finance MBBS in Nepal and how much they cover, so ask before you pay the seat fee and start the paperwork the day the offer letter lands. Your state’s scholarship portal is also worth a look.

After MBBS

College of Medical Sciences Nepal Placement and Career After MBBS

CMS does not run placement drives, and no medical college really does. After the internship, the usual route home is FMGE (or NExT, once it replaces FMGE), a further year of supervised internship in India, then registration with your state medical council. From there you can work as a medical officer or sit NEET PG.

The other path is to stay in Nepal, pass the Nepal Medical Council exam and compete for an MD or MS seat through MEC, CMS’s own programmes included. Students who clear FMGE first time mostly began preparing early.

Compare Colleges

Popular Nepal Colleges to Compare for MBBS

CMS is one of several good options, so compare a few before you decide. Chitwan Medical College is in the same city, which makes it the easiest side-by-side check on fees, hospital and hostel. Manipal College of Medical Sciences in Pokhara and Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences in Dhulikhel are KU options many Indian families already know, and Kathmandu Medical College puts you in the capital, where rent and food cost more. Birat Medical College in Biratnagar is closer to the Bihar border; read our Birat Medical College admission 2027 page.

FAQs

College of Medical Sciences Nepal MBBS Admission 2027: FAQs

The College of Medical Sciences (CMS), Bharatpur lists the total MBBS package for Indian students at about ₹58 to 65 lakh for 5.5 years. Hostel is about ₹95,000 a year, and mess, Kathmandu University registration and exam fees are extra. This is an estimate from the 2025-26 batch, so get the official 2027 fee sheet in INR and USD in writing before you pay.

The college's own estimate is about ₹30 lakh in year one and about ₹7 lakh a year from year 2 to year 5, plus roughly ₹95,000 a year for the hostel. The first payment is the heaviest, so plan your education loan around it. Ask whether the internship year is included.

Yes. An Indian student who wants to practise in India after an MBBS in Nepal must qualify NEET-UG, which means the 50th percentile for the general category and the 40th for SC/ST/OBC. CMS does not publish a fixed cutoff. Your seat depends on your merit position in the MEC matching round and how many foreign seats are open that year.

You need Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English from a recognised board, and a qualifying NEET-UG score. The college asks for 50% in each of Physics, Chemistry and Biology and 50% overall, so a 48 in one subject can rule you out. Confirm the age cut-off date with the admission office.

Foreign candidates apply through Nepal's Medical Education Commission (MEC) portal, entrance.mec.gov.np, by sitting MECEE-BL or by using a qualifying NEET score under the foreign sub-category. MEC then runs a matching round, and CMS confirms your allotment and sends the fee schedule. Dates for 2027 are not confirmed, so check mec.gov.np for notices and vacant seats.

CMS has about 100 MBBS seats a year, and roughly half are open to foreign students. The exact 2027 foreign quota depends on the MEC allocation, so ask the college in writing how many seats are open to Indian students this year.

Yes. CMS is a private medical college affiliated with Kathmandu University, which sets the syllabus and awards the degree, and it is recognised by the Nepal Medical Council. It is also listed in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools and with ECFMG. Verify the current documents yourself before paying.

Most Indian students stay in the college hostel, at least for the first couple of years, at an estimated ₹95,000 a year. Ask whether the fee includes food, because mess charges are often separate, and confirm room sharing, separate blocks for boys and girls, Indian food and Wi-Fi. The teaching hospital is on the same campus.

CMS is in Bharatpur, Chitwan district, Bagmati Province, Nepal, about 146 km from Kathmandu. The college puts Raxaul on the Bihar border at about 126 km and Gorakhpur at about 240 km by road. You can also fly to Kathmandu and take the short domestic flight to Bharatpur. Indian citizens do not need a visa.
